Wood Repair

Wood repair comes in many forms. You may be looking to repair rotted wood, split wood or simply touch up wooden flooring that has aged, for example.

If you are looking to repair wood, depending on the scale of your project, it is always best done by a professional. Determine whether the wood needs to be replaced, or whether it is possible to carry out repairs (or partial replacement).

How to Repair Split Wood

If the damaged wood you are working with can be repaired rather than replaced, the next step is to assess which course of action will be best in reviving split wood. Smaller wood splits can be repaired using simple wood glue, clamping the split and allowing the glue to dry and adhere overnight.

For larger splits, we recommend the use of a wood filler, specifically an epoxy resin wood filler. For this kind of wood damage, a professional should be employed when repairing it.

Epoxy wood fillers are used to repair mainly wooden products, such as doors and windows, although they can be used for various other wooden structures that are susceptible to damage (for example wooden playgrounds).

Epoxy resin or resin is a material that has many different uses and is created by mixing two components that are matched to each other. As there is no water or solvent in resin wood fillers to evaporate, epoxy (resin) does not shrink. You can also use an electric sander on epoxy wood filler and paint over it after you’re done.

To repair split wood (or wood that has large cracks), the following steps can be applied (by a professional):

Step 1: Remove paint
Step 2: Remove all decay
Step 3: Measure moisture level (≤ 18%)
Step 4: Prime contact area with DRY FIX®
Step 5: Butter contact area with DRY FLEX® / BIO FLEX™
Step 6: Shape and finish repair
Step 7: Sand finished repair and apply paint

These steps can vary depending on the size and nature of wood damage.

How to make a permanent repair

Before we explain how to repair wood rot, it is first necessary to explain exactly what wood rot is and how it is caused.

What is wood rot?

Wood rot is an attack on timber, caused by fungal spores. It usually occurs in wooden frames or other facade carpentry that is exposed to various external influences.

What are the causes? Wood has many different influences. There are weather influences such as temperature differences, rain and wind, but also mechanical damage (damage that you do to the wood yourself) and pollution. All this causes damage to the paint system, which leads to the activation of fungal spores more quickly. Ultimately, it is these fungal spores that attack the wood and therefore cause rot. The fungal spores become active by the following three factors:

  • Temperature between 5 and 40ºC
  • Oxygen
  • Moisture content of the wood higher than 21%.

Wood Repair Resin

A resin wood filler is a perfect alternative to a two-pack filler when repairing wood. It is not only more environmentally friendly, but it is more cost-effective and durable too.

Also known as an epoxy wood filler, this product makes for a sustainable and durable repair to damaged wood, designed to last the test of time. Many alternative epoxy fillers still contain polyester (like two-pack filler), however, the Repair Care DRY FLEX® filler contains none, ensuring repairs are not brittle or susceptible to rot or other failures in the future.

How do you repair wood rot?

The best results come from using our DRY FLEX® resins following our 7 steps to achieving durable repairs.  You will then eliminate all of the rot and ensure a sound wood rot repair.

  • Step 1: Remove paint at least 10 millimetre from around the damaged area.
  • Step 2: Remove all decayed damaged wood using a high-speed router with a round cutter, leaving a straight shoulder with a minimum depth of 5 millimetre.  You must ensure all of the wood rot is removed.
  • Step 3: Check moisture content this must be 18% or below, then apply DRY FIX® by brushing liberally onto the bare wood allowing this to penetrate the wood for a minimum of 20 minutes.
  • Step 4: Using the EASY•Q™ double dosing gun, dispense the 2 component DRY FLEX® on to a plastic mixing plate, mix thoroughly until a homogeneous colour is reached.  Apply a thin coat onto the primed wood.
  • Step 5: Complete the repair by adding more DRY FLEX® and shaping using metal EASY•Q™ repair knives leaving a smooth finish.
  • Step 6: When the DRY FLEX® resin has completely cured, lightly sand leaving a smooth finish and a key for the decorative coating.  Any minor defects can be rectified using DRY FLEX® SF (fine surface filler).
  • Step 7: Finish in accordance with the approved paint specification.
